Rising to the Challenge: Local Builder is Recognized as 2010 BUILDER Top 100 is Revealed

BUILDER magazine, the leading magazine in media outlet for the home building industry, unveiled the BUILDER 100, its annual ranking of the top 100 home building companies in America. Local home builder Allen Edwin Homes made the list as number 70. Despite local and national challenges in the home building industry, Allen Edwin Homes experienced growth.

“It is exciting to be recognized by BUILDER 100 for our achievements last year,” said Mike McGivney, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Allen Edwin Homes. “The success of Allen Edwin Homes can be attributed to several factors.”

Allen Edwin Homes’ belief in the growth and economic health of Michigan led to growth and expansion into new Michigan markets. In 2010, Allen Edwin Homes entered the Lansing market, which resulted in a third of its yearly sales. Five years prior, Allen Edwin Homes made its first geographic expansion outside of Kalamazoo into Grand Rapids, quickly followed by expansion into areas along the lakeshore.

Continued support from the local professional real estate community has further led to Allen Edwin Homes’ success and valuable insight, which has impacted its product evolution. Allen Edwin Homes has evolved product offering to meet the needs of the market. Providing a quality, stylish new home with a 10 year structural warranty that is Energy Star qualified to first-time and move-up buyers has proven effective.

The BUILDER 100 list is comprised of both private and public builders and identified the top home builders in America by annual closings, gross revenue, and rate of change year over year, as well as information about where and what type of home they build.

BUILDER 100 companies saw their aggregate share of closings of for-sale units rise in 2010 by 6.7 percentage points. This is the highest share of market since 2006 and the second highest in a decade. The top 100 home builders outperformed the overall market last year.

“It’s interesting that more than half of Builder 100 companies managed to increase sales or revenues last year,” said Boyce Thompson, BUILDER’s editorial director.

Allen Edwin Homes was no exception. In 2009 Allen Edwin Homes sold 438 homes. In 2010 Allen Edwin Homes sold over 500 homes. Allen Edwin Homes closed 381 homes in 2010 and achieved $62 million in total revenue as reported by BUILDER 100.

“Our success in 2010 was driven by our continued focus to provide key elements in every home we build,” McGivney stated. “Our homeowners are savvy and expect a new home from Allen Edwin to be built with the highest quality, choice, more style and value."

Two key realizations paved the current path for Allen Edwin Homes: the company realized it could not rely solely on one market for future success; and commitment to continued product evolution to meet the needs and desires of buyers was essential.

Allen Edwin Homes now expands across the Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Lakeshore areas. Allen Edwin Homes provides new homes for the first-time, move-up and executive buyers. Every new home built by Allen Edwin is Energy Star Qualified and includes a 10 Yr. Structural Warranty.

Expect more product refinement and expansion in 2011.

“In 2011 we will continue to expand geographically,” said McGivney. “We will also continue to provide diverse home styles from the $100,000s-$400,000s that maintain the highest level of choice, quality, style and value.”
